I have been going to Mexican Cafe for years, and have always had a pleasurable experience. My meal there tonight, however, was not so pleasurable. Our server was very timely with our drinks, and that was the high point. Waited 20 minutes to order food, then another hour to get it. After my first drink, my party waited 15 minutes before we even saw our server to ask for another. The food was cold and dry, which really surprised me, because I go there for their food, not always the drinks. Our party, upon finishing our meal, had our plates cleared in a timely manner and then sat there for another half hour before we had to flag down the server for our check. I do not abide by the 20% tip rule. I generally tip more, and if the service is only ok, I will leave 20%. Our party did not leave 20% and when the server noticed this, she came back to ask what happened, because we only left 10%. That takes a lot of nerve and is quite rude, so I will be skipping the summer day on Mexican Cafe's porch from now on. I have eaten here several times over the last few years, most recently in January 2008. I am careful to follow the server or cooks recommendation however, nobody has ever recommended the Chicken! :) PLUSES: The Baked Brie w/Honey appetizer is really quite good, as is the Spinach Crab dip. As entree's go, the Salmon w/Blueberries is wonderful. Mushroom crepes were good, not great, but very tasty. For desert, have whatever in-season fresh-fruit torte or crepe that is recommended. BUT GREAT!, 5 Stars http://www.surfannapolis.com/entities/entityDetail.cfm?said=79 Reviewer says the following about Magothy Seafood: <br/> I haven't been to magothy seafood in hmmm a couple of years, in fact the last time I set foot there I found out that the loveable retiver had passed away! If you are going to magothy seafood you are headed for a laid back, good time, no stress environment! My parents recently moved to the eastern shore and this is a shore kind of place. Its all about the crabs and beer and thats it! Catch a cruise on that lil boat and make what you can make of it! I grew up in Bowie with family in St. Michaels and this my experience was great because I, sorry to say, don't have the snobby Annapolitan in me (even though I have been living and working in Annapolis for 9 years now) It's the same as going to Cantlers only every Annapolitan has decided its quaint instead of smelly and dirty! Same thing as with Crab Claw in St. Mikes... Go to Magothy and pretend like you are going to a friends house for crabs! Believe it or not...you just might have a good time, even if you can't get a dirty martini.... Great atmosphere. The unfortunate: - LOTS of flies. - Don't ever eat the quiche or cake. It sits there for a long time and it's always been stale whenever I've had it. The best cake/quiche is at Hard Bean. - Loud. Hard to do work here. - Ethics: I hate Starbucks (never go there), but from what I hear, nobody at City Dock, not even people who have been working there for years, make even $7/hr. If the other coffee shops around town, which get much less business than CD, can afford to start new employees at $8/hr, it seems criminal to reward such great employees with such unconscionably low pay.
